Looking Forward and Starting Over

I'm Jerry A. Goodson.  Like everyone else, I make observations and form opinions.  This is where I'll put them.

This has been a long time coming... my new blog.  I'll be turning forty in a few weeks, and I know I'm not the same person I was twenty years ago.

Twenty years ago, the world to me was mostly "black and white."  Things were either right or wrong, and people were either going to Heaven or Hell.  Well, people are still either going to Heaven or Hell, but I've certainly changed many of my viewpoints on right vs. wrong, black vs. white, and sinner vs. saint.

It's not my convictions that have changed.  Nothing is as eye-opening as going places and seeing things from a whole new perspective.  I've learned the most when I'd shut up and listen to what others have to say as opposed to focusing on telling them what I had to say.  One of the best lessons I learned came when I was going through professional development while I was a police chief:  "We judge others on their actions, but we judge ourselves on our intentions."

* BOOM! *  Mic drop.

I stopped looking so hard at WHAT people do, but rather WHY they did it.

We are a product of our raising.  Parental influence (or even lack thereof), socio-economic status, school and education, life experience, and faith.

This was supposed to be me introducing myself to you.  I'm just going to warn you now, things are going to get interesting around here.  Some content will be deep, some will be light and funny, and some may just be rants.  Buckle up, buttercup, because we're going to go for a ride!
